The Shidler College of Business will be the first school on the University of Hawaii at Manoa campus to install solar panels.

The 4.5-kilowatt photovoltaic power system is expected to generate approximately 24 kilowatts of power each day, which is enough to power about eight homes. “We are committed to alternative energy solutions to meet the University of Hawaii’s overall goal of generating 25 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2020,” said V. Vance Roley, dean of the Shidler College of Business, in a prepared statement.

The $50,000 system was donated by real estate investor and entrepreneur Jay Shidler, for whom the college is named.

It includes a Web-based monitoring system that will allow students, faculty and the general public to monitor solar power, reduced emissions and environmental statistics on a daily basis.

The system is expected to be operational by early in the spring semester, the university said.
