GE Making Big Strides with Solar
April 15th, 2011

GE’s renewable energy portfolio is getting bigger, especially with their recent progress in the area of solar panels. In fact, their full size, thin film solar panel has been independently certified as the most efficient ever publicly reported milestone for the technology. GE has spent $600 million plus on solar technology and commercialization as well as on the acquisition of the power conversion company Converteam and the thin film solar technology company PrimeStar Solar. Part of that investment also includes the building of a factory intended to manufacture their new solar panels, which will eventually power 80,000 homes annually. A location for the facility has not been decided on just yet, but it will be the largest solar power manufacturing plant in operation in the U.S and will employ somewhere in the area of 400 people.

GE has also become one of the world’s major wind turbine manufacturers only further solidifying their commitment, through innovation and R and D, to provide global renewable energy options. GE is hoping to capitalize on the fact that photovoltaics is expected to grow by 75 gigawatts over the next five years. Global change is coming and through recent technology and investments, GE has certainly placed themselves in the solar circle.
