Where the Chips Will Fall
March 17th, 2011

The new craze in Florida has nothing to do with Mickey Mouse and everything to do with the sun in the aptly named “sunshine” state. Solar power plants are continuing to pop up all over Florida and this past week, Blue Chip Energy signed an agreement to acquire land in Lake County, which lies about 50 miles northwest of Orlando. This new solar farm will be the largest photovoltaic (PV) solar plant in Florida with a capacity of 40 megawatts.

Blue Chip Energy (BCE) is an independent power producer whose goal is to reduce Florida’s dependence on fossil fuels. As an independent power producer, BCE will buy or lease land to build solar farms on and then turn around and sell the power produced to local energy companies. The 40 megawatt (MW) farm will use 140,000 solar modules to generate an estimated 64 million kilowatt hours annually. This is enough power to provide electricity needs to roughly 8,000 homes.

BCE has also finished the first stage of a 10 MW solar farm in Lake Mary, Florida. When finished, the Lake County solar farm is estimated to be one of the largest PV solar plants in the United States.
