A Win for the Big Electric Companies
April 1st, 2011

The House’s utilities committee for Florida met on Tuesday and approved a bill allowing utilities to charge their customers up to $2 billion over five years. These extra charges, which will be added to the monthly bill and would range anywhere from $2.42 for Florida Power & Light customers to $3.32 for Progress Energy customers, will go towards creating or buying more renewable energy.

An amendment introduced by Rep. Ben Albritton , R-Wauchula, allowing smaller energy producing companies, such as rooftop solar projects, to share in the electric generation was thrown out after receiving opposition from the larger electric companies. The big electric companies, FP&L and Progress Energy, opposed the amendment stating that smaller companies are unregulated and unreliable. Albritton hopes a deal can be reached for the smaller companies as the bill moves forward.

This is a tremendous step for Florida which could lead to some great opportunities to create renewable energy in the future. Florida is embarrassingly behind compared to some other states when it comes to solar advancement but each step has helped move them into position to be a leading producer of alternative energy.
