The Sunshine State Cashes In
March 22nd, 2011

It may seem obvious to some that Florida would be a front runner for alternative energy solutions such as solar power plants but until recently this was not the case. One March 5, huge strides were made for Florida in terms of reducing the use of fossil fuels. Florida Power & Light unveiled one of three new solar facilities, this one located in Martin County. The Martin Next Generation Solar Energy Center is the first of its kind in the world. The new facility consists of 190,000 solar panels working in combination with an existing natural gas-fired power plant, essentially making it the first Hybrid-Solar Power Plant.

The 75-megawatt center was built to channel the sun’s free fuel which in turn can power roughly 11,000 homes. They are also expected to reduce the use of fossil fuels by about 41 billion cubic feet of natural gas and over 600,000 barrels of oil. Although, substantial, these are not the only benefits of FPL’s projects. This two-year operation by FPL has built three huge solar projects, creating more than 5,000 jobs. On top of that, the more than $5 million in local tax revenue expected in the first year of operation will provide a boost for Martin County’s long-term economic plans.

FPL has more projects in the works and several planned to be launched immediately, causing Floridians to smile at the prospect of green jobs, and environmentally safe energy. Even better would be a reduction on electric bills, but I would not be expecting that anytime soon.
